The lively city of Avellino, with its rich and troubled history, is mostly modern with long and wide tree-lined avenues, but retains a very interesting historic center, which concentrates most of the monuments. Walking through the narrow streets and squares of the historic center you can visit the Cathedral and its crypt, the church of San Biagio, San Francesco Saverio (known as the Church of Santa Rita); you can see the remains of the Lombard walls on the side of the imposing clock tower, symbol of the city, which from its 40 meters overtops  the roofs of the town. From Partenio  mountains, the Montevergine Sanctuary, famous destination for pilgrims, overlooks the city: you can reach that magical place by a thscenic funicular from Mercogliano, and it takes just 7 minutes!

In addition to archaeological sites, meet imposing castles that bring to memory and looting wars, sieges and battles but also worldly courts and elegant parties.

Among these, the Leonessa Castle in Montemiletto, one of the best preserved in the province of Avellino, the Lancellotti Castle in Lauro, completely rebuilt in the second half of the nineteenth century, and the Castle dominating Ariano Irpino from a strategic location, almost impenetrable,  ancient and generous land that hides infinite paths to be discovered without ever losing the route.
